Costa Rica 5-Day Itinerary: Volcanoes, Beaches, Adventure, Hot Springs & Luxury (Nature + Adrenaline + Relaxation)

By Siddharth Shah, CEO – FastTreck Travels - Published on www.TheGlobalRoamer.com

Planning a Costa Rica trip? This compact Central American gem delivers world-class biodiversity, active volcanoes, pristine beaches, thrilling adventures, and relaxing hot springs—all wrapped in the famous Pura Vida lifestyle. In this detailed Costa Rica travel guide, I share my personal experience on a perfect 5-day / 4-night itinerary that combines the country’s most famous tourist destinations. Whether you're looking for the best Costa Rica itinerary for first-timers or a balanced mix of nature, adrenaline, and luxury, this guide has you covered.

Why Costa Rica Should Be on Your Bucket List

Costa Rica (“Rich Coast”) protects over 25% of its territory as national parks and reserves, making it one of the best eco-tourism destinations in the world. From towering volcanoes and misty rainforests to golden beaches and abundant wildlife (sloths, monkeys, toucans, and more), it offers something for every traveler.

Major Cities & Airports in Costa Rica

  • San José: The capital and main gateway, located in the Central Valley.
  • Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO): Primary international airport near San José.
  • Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR): Serves the popular Guanacaste beach region.

Other key areas include La Fortuna (Arenal), Herradura, Quepos, and Manuel Antonio.

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica

  • Dry Season (High Season): December to April – sunny skies, ideal for beaches and outdoor activities (busier and pricier).
  • Green/Wet Season (May–November): Lush scenery, fewer crowds, lower rates. Afternoon showers are common; excellent for wildlife spotting.

Shoulder months like May–June offer a great balance—exactly when I traveled (May 30 – June 3, 2026).

Most Famous Places in Costa Rica: Highlights & Details

Costa Rica boasts iconic destinations that draw millions of visitors annually. Here are key ones, with emphasis on those featured in my tour:

  • Poás Volcano National Park: One of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes at 2,708 m (8,885 ft), featuring one of the world’s largest craters (nearly 1 mile wide) with a bubbling sulfuric lake, fumaroles, and geysers. The park spans diverse ecosystems from cloud forest to páramo, with trails to Botos Lagoon. It’s a top day trip from San José, offering dramatic views and educational insights into volcanic activity.
  • Arenal Volcano & La Fortuna: The perfectly conical Arenal Volcano is a symbol of Costa Rica. Though currently in a resting phase, the surrounding area is packed with adventures: hiking lava fields in Arenal Volcano National Park, waterfalls (like La Fortuna Waterfall), and geothermal hot springs. La Fortuna serves as the vibrant hub for ziplining, canyoning, and wildlife spotting.
  • Manuel Antonio National Park: One of the smallest yet most popular parks in Costa Rica, famed for its stunning combination of tropical rainforest and white-sand beaches. Home to four species of monkeys (including the endangered squirrel monkey), sloths, iguanas, and over 350 bird species. Short, well-maintained trails lead to viewpoints and swimmable beaches like Playa Manuel Antonio. Early morning visits with a naturalist guide maximize wildlife sightings.
  • La Paz Waterfall Gardens: A premier nature park near Poás, featuring five majestic waterfalls accessible via rainforest trails, plus one of Costa Rica’s largest animal sanctuaries (aviary, butterfly observatory, hummingbird garden, serpentarium, frogs, monkeys, and wild cats). It provides an excellent introduction to Costa Rican biodiversity with educational exhibits and a buffet restaurant.

Other renowned spots not on this short trip but worth mentioning include Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve (zip-lining and misty hikes), Tortuguero National Park (canals and turtle nesting), and the dry forests and beaches of Guanacaste.

Accommodations: Hotels Stayed & Visited During the Tour

A highlight of this trip was the excellent selection of hotels, each perfectly positioned to enhance the experience.

  • Hotel Arenal Manoa (La Fortuna / Arenal area): This charming resort offers stunning direct views of Arenal Volcano from spacious, colonial-style rooms and balconies. With its own mineral hot springs, adult and family pools, lush tropical gardens, and tranquil atmosphere, it’s an ideal base for relaxation after adventure days. The property feels luxurious yet welcoming, with excellent service and opportunities to spot wildlife like sloths and birds right on the grounds.
  • Los Sueños Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort (Herradura, Central Pacific): A beautiful colonial-style luxury resort with expansive ocean and marina views, multiple pools, golf course access, and a wide range of dining options. Located in a prime spot near the marina, it provides a sophisticated beach-adjacent experience with spacious, well-appointed rooms—perfect for unwinding in comfort.
  • Santa Lucia Jungle Hacienda, Costa Rica, Autograph Collection (visited for dinner and site inspection): This boutique jungle retreat, part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, immerses guests in nature within Carara National Park. It blends refined luxury with wild jungle surroundings, offering a serene, eco-conscious escape along riverbanks with mountain and forest views.
  • Hotel Parador (Manuel Antonio area, visited for lunch and site inspection): An award-winning eco-luxury cliff-top resort boasting breathtaking Pacific Ocean views, infinity pools, a world-class spa, and abundant wildlife. Known for responsible luxury, it features elegant rooms, excellent dining, and direct proximity to Manuel Antonio National Park—ideal for those seeking a perfect blend of nature and high-end comfort.
